Priming the Filter Pump

Required tools

  • Funnel

  • 1/2 inch quick connect hose clamp

  • Clear vinyl hose, approximately 2 ft (50–60 cm)

Required parts

  • Cold, clean cooking oil

Estimated Time

• 10 minutes or less

Overview

Purpose

This procedure explains how to prime the fryer filter pump when the pump motor runs but does not create suction. Priming restores oil flow so the pump can operate correctly.

When to Use This Procedure

Prime the filter pump if:

  • You have just installed a new filter pump.

  • You have just removed the pump cap or pump for cleaning or seal kit replacement.

  • The pump motor turns on

    • The filter pan and oil return plumbing is fully assembled and clean.

    • There is no suction at the pickup tube.

To avoid severe burns and equipment damage:

  • Use PPE.

  • Ensure filter pain is empty prior to removing from unit.

  • Allow oil to cool to 100°F (38°C) or below before draining. Pumping hot oil through the unit damages the pump over time.

  • Use only an approved oil shuttle to transport oil to be discarded.

Overflow Risk

  • The oil may be stirred only during the morning start up procedure. Do not stir the oil at any other time.

  • Moisture and crackling settles at the bottom of the vat during normal operation. Manually stirring the oil brings the water and hot oil into contact.

  • Ensure the fryer is level.

  • Ensure the oil is at the appropriate level. Oil should never be above the upper vat “fill” line.

  • Ensure the gas control valve and burners are properly adjusted. (Gas units only)

  • Failure to follow these instructions can result in oil overflowing the vat which could cause serious burns, personal injury, fire, and/or property damage.

Only perform this procedure when the unit is cool or severe burns may result.

Procedure

    Confirming the Pump Needs Priming

  1. Turn the filter pump ON.

  2. Verify the pump motor is running.

  3. Check that all filter pan components are:

    • Present

    • Clean

    • Correctly installed

  4. Place your hand over the pickup tube while the pump is running.

  5. If there is no suction, continue with this procedure.

  6. Preparing the Funnel and Hose

  7. Insert the vinyl hose into the funnel.

  8. Secure the hose with the quick connect clamp.

  9. Make sure the connection is tight and leak free.

  10. Manual Drain and Return Valve Fryers - Accessing the Pickup Tube

  11. Open the return valve.

  12. Disconnect the pickup tube from the stem pipe tube.

  13. Turn the dairy union clockwise to loosen it.

  14. Remove the pickup tube connection.

  15. Adding Oil to Prime the Pump

  16. Insert the hose and funnel into the pickup tube.

  17. Slowly pour cold, clean oil into the funnel.

  18. Continue pouring until the hose is fully saturated with oil.

  19. Raise the funnel slightly while pouring.

  20. Gently shake the funnel to help oil flow down the tube.

  21. Stop when no more oil flows into the pickup tube.

  22. Running the Pump

  23. Turn the pump ON.

  24. Allow the pump to slowly pull oil into the system.

  25. Watch for oil to begin moving quickly.

  26. When all oil is pulled from the funnel and hose:

    • Close the return valve

    • Turn the pump OFF

  27. Reassembling the Pickup Tube

  28. Remove the funnel and hose.

  29. Reconnect the pickup tube to the stem pipe tube.

  30. Turn the dairy union counterclockwise to tighten

  31. Returning Oil to the Vat

  32. Open the return valve.

  33. Confirm the drain valve is fully closed.

  34. Turn the pump motor ON.

  35. Allow all oil to return to the vat.

  36. Close the drain valve.

  37. Turn the pump motor OFF.

Testing the Pump

Confirm the procedure was successful:

✅ Pump creates strong suction

✅ Oil flows smoothly from the drain pan to the vat

✅ No leaks at pickup tube or unions

✅ Pump runs quietly without cavitation

If suction does not return, further troubleshooting is required.
