Troubleshooting the E-40 (A-D) Incorrect Software Version Error Code

Overview

The E-40 Software Version Mismatch error occurs when one or more control components on the fryer are running different software versions than other components in the system. All controls must have compatible software versions for proper communication and operation.

The E-40 error includes the following subcodes:

  • E-40 A/C – Touchscreen Display Control Internal (VIU/VDM) Board Software Version Mismatch

  • E-40 B – GMU Software Version Mismatch

  • E-40 D – High-Limit Board Software Version Mismatch

In each case, the error is displayed on the control running an older software version than the most current version detected on the fryer.

Call Avoidance

Before dispatching a service technician, perform the following checks:

  1. Verify that the fryer was not recently updated with software on only one control or a board was recently replaced.

  2. Verify that all connected controls display the same software version.

    • You can check software version by going into the Control Settings menu>Information>About this Fryer>More information

    • Verify the HMI(VIU), VDM, OMS, and GMU(s) show the same versions on all displays.

    • If a board was recently replaced or software updated to only one control, a software update will need to be performed on the remaining controls.

    Follow the Software Update procedure.

  3. After completing updates, restart the fryer and confirm the error has cleared.

    Power cycle the fryer:

    1. Turn the fryer OFF.

    2. Wait 30 seconds.

    3. Turn the fryer ON.

  4. Check whether all controls are communicating normally.

If the error clears after software synchronization, no service call is required.

Field Troubleshooting

Recommended Parts

Parts are typically not required. Replace components only if software cannot be updated or if a board fails to accept programming. Possible replacement parts:

  • Touchscreen Display Control (VIU)/(VDM)
  • GMU Board
  • High-Limit board
  • OMS Board

Recommended Tools

  • Approved software update package

  • Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, nut drivers, etc.)

  • Henny Penny Recommended USB storage device.

Troubleshooting Steps

Determine which E-40 code is active:

  • If the fryer displays E-40 A/C.

  • If the fryer displays E-40 B.

  • If the fryer displays E-40 D.

Troubleshooting the E-40 A/C – Touchscreen Display (VIU/VDM) Software Version Mismatch

  1. Access the software version information on all Displays.

  2. Compare the displayed software versions.

    1. If all displays show the same version, go to Verify System Operation.

    2. If one or more displays show an older version:

      1. Perform software update using latest software package.

      2. Restart the fryer.

      3. Do one of the following:

        • If the error clears, troubleshooting is complete.

        • If the error remains, verify update completion and repeat the update procedure.

If the update cannot be completed, replace the affected control and update software again.

Troubleshooting the E-40 B – GMU Software Version Mismatch

  1. Access the software version information on all Displays.

  2. Compare the displayed software versions.

    1. If all displays show the same version, go to Verify System Operation.

    2. If one or more GMU boards have an older version:

      1. Perform software update using latest software package.

      2. Restart the fryer.

      3. Do one of the following:

        • If the error clears, troubleshooting is complete.

        • If the error remains, verify communication between controls and repeat the update procedure.

If the update cannot be completed, replace the affected GMU board and update software again.

Troubleshooting the E-40 D – High-Limit Board Software Version Mismatch

  1. Access the software version information on all Displays.

  2. Compare the displayed software versions.

    1. If all displays show the same version, go to Verify System Operation.

    2. If one or more high limit boards have an older version:

      1. Perform software update using latest software package.

      2. Restart the fryer.

      3. Do one of the following:

        • If the error clears, troubleshooting is complete.

        • If the error remains, replace the affected high limit board and update software again.

Verify System Operation

  1. Confirm all software versions match across the fryer.

  2. Clear any active error messages.

  3. Cycle power to the fryer.

  4. Allow the fryer to complete startup.

  5. Do one of the following:

    • If E-40 is no longer present, return the fryer to service.

    • If E-40 returns:

      1. Check for additional communication or hardware faults.

      2. Replace the component that cannot maintain or accept the correct software version.

Other Possibilities

Incomplete Software Update

A software update may have been interrupted by:

  • Power loss

  • USB removal

  • Network or communication interruption

Reinstall the software on all affected controls and verify successful completion.

Incorrect Software Package

A control may have been loaded with software intended for a different model or platform.

Verify that the approved software package is being used for the specific fryer model and configuration.

Communication Issues

A communication fault between controls may cause a mismatch condition even when software versions are correct.

  • Inspect:

  • Communication harnesses

  • Connectors

  • Control board connections

Repair any wiring or connection issues and restart the fryer.
