Troubleshooting an E-60 (VIU/GMU/OMS) - Communication Loss Error Code

To avoid electrical shock or property damage, disconnect power before installing or servicing equipment. A qualified technician must perform the service procedures.

Overview

The E-60 Error indicates a communication failure within the fryer's CAN network. The CAN network uses CAN/Ethernet-style communication cables to allow the fryer's control boards to communicate with each other. The error may involve communication between:

  • OMS Board (Filtration Board)
  • GMU Board (I/O Board)
  • VIU Board (Touchscreen Display Control)

E-60 OMS Non-Critical Error (Yellow Triangle)

Message: OMS (Filtration) Board Communication Has Failed

  • Communication with the OMS (Filtration) board has been lost.
  • Cooking operations can continue.
  • Filtering functions will not operate.

E-60 VIU/GMU Critical Error (Red Triangle)

Message: GMU (I/O) Board Communication Failed

  • Communication with the GMU (I/O) board has been lost.
  • Cooking operations are disabled.

Call Avoidance

Before dispatching a service technician, verify the following:

  1. Cycle fryer power OFF for 30 seconds, then power ON.

  2. Allow the fryer to complete start-up.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • If the E-60 error clears, continue monitoring to verify the error code does not come back.

    • If the E-60 error returns, field troubleshooting service is required.

NOTE: If the E-60 is the OMS Non-Critical (Yellow Triangle) error, the customer can still cook, but they will not be able to filter.

Field Troubleshooting

Recommended Parts

Depending on findings, the following parts may be required:

  • OMS (Filtration) Board
  • GMU (I/O) Board
  • VIU (Touchscreen Display Control) Board
  • CAN Communication Cable
  • Power Supply Board

Recommended Tools

  • Digital Multimeter
  • CAN Cable Tester
  • Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, nut drivers, etc.)

Scenario 1 – E-60 Warning Error (Yellow Triangle Only)

Possible Causes:

  • No power to OMS board

  • Failed OMS board

  • Failed CAN communication cable

  1. Lower touchscreen control to inspect the OMS board.

    Do one of the following:

    • If LEDs are ON: Go to Step 2.

    • If LEDs are OFF: Go to Step 4.

  2. Test both CAN cables connected to the OMS board using a CAN cable tester.

    Do one of the following:

    • If a cable fails testing, replace the faulty CAN cable. Verify operation.

    • If both cables pass testing, go to Step 3.

  3. If the OMS LEDs are illuminated, and CAN cables test good, verify using the cable routing diagram that the CAN cables are connected to the correct location and secure on the OMS and the other end. If cables are in the correct position and secure, Go to Step 4.

  4. Verify line voltage is 24VDC to the OMS board on P1.

    Do one of the following:

    • If no voltage is present, verify line voltage out of the right block, bottom row, pins 3 and 4.

    • If voltage is present out of the block, verify harness connections and inspect for any damage. Replace as needed.

    • If line voltage is good from block to OMS, check power supply boards for input and output voltage.

There are a total of 3 power supply boards and a power distribution board located in the same power supply access panel.

      Power supply locations:

2-vat and 3-vat units: Behind the left side panel.

4-vat units: Open the left-hand door and remove the adjacent access panel.

    • Measure the input voltage on the bottom of the power supply boards across the white and black wires.

      • If line voltage is not present, check incoming power to boards from blocks and wiring.

Replace block or wiring as needed.

      • If line voltage is present, check the outgoing voltage of power supply.

  5. Inspect the power distribution board (DC terminal block) and OMS board power connector (J20).

    Do one of the following:

    • If loose or damaged connections are found, repair or reconnect as necessary and then verify operation.

    • If connections are good and voltage is present, replace the OMS board.

Scenario 2 – E-60 Warning Error on One Screen and E-60 Critical Error on Another Screen

Possible Causes:

  • No power to PMU/GMU board
  • No power to VDM board
  • Failed PMU/GMU board
  • Failed VDM board
  • Failed CAN communication cable
  1. Lower the VDM touchscreen assemblies.

  2. Remove the service panel below the touchscreens.

  3. Remove the 2-3/8 inch mounting nuts securing the PMU/GMU brackets.

  4. Lower the brackets for access.

  5. Inspect LEDs on both boards.

    Do one of the following:

    • If LEDs are ON, go to Step 6.

    • If LEDs are OFF, go to Step 10.

  6. Test each CAN cable individually. Reinstall each cable in its original location before testing the next cable.

    Do one of the following:

    • If a cable fails testing, replace the faulty cable and verify operation.

    • If all cables pass testing, go to Step 7.

  7. If all LEDs are ON, and all CAN cables test good, then a PMU/GMU board or VDM board is likely faulty.

    Do one of the following:

    • If the board causing the communication loss can be identified, replace the failed board.

    • If the failed board cannot be identified, review the sequence of events when the error occurred and use service diagnostics to attempt to identify faulty board. Contact Technical Support for further guidance.

  8. After replacing the suspected board:

    1. Restore power.

    2. Confirm all boards communicate properly.

    3. Verify no E-60 errors are active.

    4. Do one of the following:

      • If error is cleared, repair is complete.

      • If error remains, continue investigating other boards in the communication network.

  9. If LEDs are ON, CAN cables are good, and replacement board did not resolve the issue, inspect all network wiring and connectors again before replacing additional components.

  10. Check all power supply boards and verify 24 VDC power supply. Do one of the following:

    • If 24 VDC is not present, replace the faulty power supply board.

    • If 24 VDC is present, go to Step 11.

  11. Inspect power distribution board, VDM power connectors, and PMU/GMU power connectors.

    Do one of the following:

    • If a loose, damaged, or corroded connection is found, repair and retest.

    • If all connections are good and voltage is correct, replace the affected PMU/GMU or VDM board.

Other Possibilities

Poor Electrical Connections

Cause: Loose or partially connected wiring may cause intermittent communication failures.

Action: Disconnect and reconnect all related connectors. Pay particular attention to:

  • CAN cables

  • Power supply connectors

  • Board-to-board connections

CAN Cables Installed Incorrectly

Cause: A previous repair may have connected CAN cables to the wrong ports.

Action:

  • Compare cable routing to the factory wiring diagram.

  • Correct any incorrect connections.

DC Voltage Being Pulled Down by Another Component

Cause: A failed DC-powered component can overload the 24 VDC circuit and remove power from control boards. Possible components include:

  • Drain valve actuators

  • Selector valve

  • Pump motor relay

  • Other 24 VDC devices

Action:

  1. Verify loss of power exists.

  2. Disconnect DC-powered loads one at a time.

  3. Monitor 24 VDC supply after each component is disconnected.

  4. If voltage returns after disconnecting a component, replace the failed component causing the voltage drop.
