Troubleshooting an E-31 Error Elements Up

Element tilt switch
For replacement parts refer to LVE 300 Series.
Overview
The E-31 error occurs when the PMU/GMU board detects that the element tilt switch (NO switch) is open when the unit is trying to heat. This would indicate that the elements are up and out of the oil which presents a safety concern. The PMU/GMU board detects this via the J23 connector on the PMU/GMU board. When the elements are down, the switch should be in the closed position completing the safety circuit and allowing the unit to heat.
Call Avoidance
![]() | Burn Risk To avoid burns, use PPE when lifting elements. |
Ask the store to ensure the elements are completely down in the vat and not obstructed.
Ask the store to check the status of the tilt switch by:
Tapping the
.Tapping Information.
Tapping Heat System.
Using the element lift tool, lift the heating element (ensure you are wearing PPE) UP and DOWN, watch to see if the status of the tilt switch changes.
If the status of the tilt switch does not change, then this will require a service call.
Field Troubleshooting
Checking Continuity on Tilt Switch
Remove the rear access panel and locate the tilt switch for the vat that is receiving the error code.
Remove the two wires attached to tilt switch and check continuity. The switch should have continuity with the elements down only. If the switch has continuity with the elements up, then replace the switch.
If the switch tests correctly, then put back together and move to the front of the fryer to check the wiring harness.
Checking Continuity on Wiring Harness
![]() | To avoid electrical shock or property damage, disconnect power before installing or servicing equipment. A qualified technician must perform the service procedures. |
Remove the front access panel by removing the cross-tip mounting screws at the lower portion.
Using a 3/8’’ nut-driver, remove the 2- 3/8’’ nuts under the PMU mounting plates. The PMU mounting plate can then be tilted forward to gain access.
To check the wiring harness from the tilt switch up to the PMU board, unplug the J23 connector on the PMU board and check the 2 left hand side pins for continuity (labeled on the board).
Refer to Wiring Diagrams for further reference.
Additional Troubleshooting
Check the mechanism that engages the element tilt switch as sometimes this arm can be disconnected from the element and require an element replacement.
Ensure the lever that is a part of the element tilt switch is not bent, causing improper connection with the switch.
