Troubleshooting an E-82D Selector Valve Error

To avoid electrical shock or property damage, disconnect power before installing or servicing equipment. A qualified technician must perform the service procedures.

Overview

The E-82D error code occurs when the VDM (touch screen) does not receive the proper feedback signal from the selector valve encoder motor. The VDM receives this information through the OMS board where the encoder motor harness connects. When the LED’s are on, the encoder motor only has 5 VDC supplied to the internal board, and not 24 VDC to turn the motor. The 24 VDC is only supplied when the motor is energized and turning to align to the appropriate port, either when filtering or in the service menu.

Call Avoidance

Perform these steps first to avoid having to go to the restaurant and adding value for your customer. These are steps we recommend every service company provide prior to going out and what makes Henny Penny the partner top food service chains can’t live without as these will save our customers money if successful. These steps can be provided over the phone, over WhatsApp, face time etc… with the restaurant manager. Try the following steps first:

  1. Try to run an express filter on a different vat:

    1. Tap the contents table in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

    2. Tap oil and filter.

    3. Select express filter, and then try to start the process.

  2. If running an express filter on a different vat doesn't work:
    1. Using the Main power switch, power down the fryer for at least 30 seconds.

    2. Turn the unit back on, and then try running an express filter again.

  3. One last thing that can be tried but is not required is:

    1. Tap the contents table in the lower left hand corner.

    2. Tap SERVICE, and then enter code 1122.

    3. Tap FILTER SYSTEM, and then tap the arrow beside selector valve in the upper right hand corner.

    4. Tap the infinity symbol on the far left next to the #1, and then tap the green play button to start turning the valve.

    5. If the valve appears to turn and you can hear it, tap the stop button.

    6. Exit all the way back to the home screen and try to start another express filter.

Field Troubleshooting

Do the following to diagnose the issue.

  1. Start by looking to see if the red LED light (Picture 1) on top of the encoder motor is on.

    1. If the LED is on, skip to step 2. If the LED is not on, unplug the harness at the encoder motor (Picture 2) and check for 5 VDC on the small red and black wires.

    2. If 5 VDC is present then replace the faulty selector valve encoder motor. If 5 VDC is not present, then replace OMS board as long as all other DC voltage components are working properly.

  2. OMS board location on a 3-vat unit

  3. Navigate to service menu > enter code 1122 > tap the filter system > tap the selector valve arrow in the upper right corner > tap the infinity symbol to energize the selector valve.

    1. Listen. Ensure motor turns, if not then check for 24 VDC.

    2. Remove front service panel, drop down PMU board brackets to gain access to OMS board and selector valve power supply connector.

    3. Unplug the selector valve encoder motor connector (Picture 3) and check for voltage (Picture 4).

    4. If voltage is present and motor does not turn, separate motor and selector valve body to make sure the valve body is not seized. If not, then replace encoder motor. If no voltage is present when energizing the selector valve encoder motor, then possibly a bad OMS board.

  4. OMS board location on a 3-vat unit

Other Possibilities

  • Possibility of another DC voltage component being faulty and taking away the voltage to the encoder motor for the selector valve. Unplug other DC components to isolate if needed. Example; drain actuator, filter motor relay, etc.
  • Loose wiring connection at board, encoder motor, supply connector plug, etc.
  • Bad wiring harness between OMS and encoder motor.
