Troubleshooting the E-5 Error Code Shelf Temperature Too Hot

-
Cross tip screwdriver
-
Multimeter

-
Shelf heater assembly
-
I/O Board assembly
Refer to UHC 600 Universal Holding Cabinet for part numbers.
Overview
The E-5 error code will be generated when the shelf set point temperature is exceeded by 11° Fahrenheit or 6° Celcius for longer than 15 minutes. The shelf heater will automatically be disabled from use until the error is resolved. Upon resolution that shelf will transition to the discard status if a timer was selected when it failed. The shelf which has generated the fault will be indicated for its location in the error logs within the control.
Call Avoidance
Perform this step first to avoid travel to the restaurant, reducing cost and adding value for your customer. Turn the main power switch off for a few moments, and then turn it back on. Wait. If the issue doesn't resolve itself, continue the troubleshooting steps below, on-site.
Field Troubleshooting
-
Double check all of the steps from the Call Avoidance section.
-
Remove the top cover of the unit to gain access to the electrical components.
-
Remove the left side panel (when facing the front) to gain access to heater wiring.
White wires are to top heaters and black wires are to bottom heaters.
-
Check amp draw on the suspect heater. A faulty heater may have a higher reading than the others and be out of specification. (Specification is 1.29 amp-1.79 amps per heater.)
-
Do one of the following:
-
If out of specification, replace the faulty heater assembly.
-
If within specification, check amp draw on the heater when the LED light (on I/O board ) for that heater goes off. If there is still amp draw when the LED is not lit, then replace the I/O board.
-
Other Possibilities
Check to make sure that the temp probe is within specification when measuring resistance. Refer to the RTD Chart.
