Troubleshooting the E-20 (J-K) PV2/MV2 Jumper Missing (Split Vat Only) Error Code

Overview

E-20 J - PV2 Jumper Missing (Split Vat Only)

This error occurs when the ignition module wiring harness is missing the PV2 configuration jumper. On split-vat units, the PV2 jumper is required to inform the GMU (Gas Management Unit) that a second pilot valve circuit is installed.

If the jumper is missing, disconnected, or the incorrect wiring harness is installed, the controller will generate an E-20 J error.

E-20 K - MV2 Jumper Missing (Split Vat Only)

This error occurs when the ignition module wiring harness is missing the MV2 configuration jumper. On split-vat units, the MV2 jumper is required to inform the GMU that a second main valve circuit is installed.

If the jumper is missing, disconnected, or the incorrect wiring harness is installed, the controller will generate an E-20 K error.

Call Avoidance

Before dispatching a service technician, perform the following checks:

  1. Verify the fryer is configured as a split-vat unit.

    • Verify in Information>About This Fryer.

  2. Turn the unit OFF and then back ON to confirm the error is still present.

  3. If error persists, a service call will be required.

Field Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Verify the displayed error is E-20 J or E-20 K.

  2. Determine whether the fryer is a split-vat configuration.

    • If the fryer is not a split-vat unit, verify the proper configuration and harness are installed.

    • If the fryer is a split-vat unit, continue to Step 3.

  3. Turn OFF power to the fryer.

  4. Access the ignition module and wiring harness.

  5. Inspect the ignition module harness for the PV2 configuration jumper or MV2 configuration jumper.

    • If the jumper is present and properly seated, continue to Step 6.

    • If the jumper is missing, reinstall or replace the jumper, then go to Step 8.

  6. Verify the installed wiring harness matches the required harness for a split-vat fryer.

    • If the correct harness is installed, continue to Step 7.

    • If the wrong harness is installed, replace it with the correct split-vat harness and then go to Step 8.

  7. Inspect the jumper and harness connections for damage, loose terminals, or poor contact.

    • If damage is found, repair or replace the affected component and then go to Step 8.

    • If no damage is found, continue troubleshooting according to standard ignition module diagnostic procedures.

  8. Restore power to the fryer.

  9. Clear the error and restart the unit.

  10. Verify operation.

    • If the error is cleared, return the fryer to service.

    • If the error remains, replace the ignition module harness with a known-good split-vat harness and retest.

    • If the error still remains after harness replacement, replace GMU Board.

Other Possibilities

  • A standard (non-split-vat) harness may have been installed during a previous repair.

  • The jumper may be present but not fully inserted into the harness connector.

  • Harness terminals may be damaged, bent, or backed out of the connector.

  • Intermittent vibration-related connection issues may cause the jumper to lose contact.

  • In rare cases, the GMU may incorrectly detect the jumper status due to an internal fault. Verify all wiring and harnesses before replacing control components.
