Troubleshooting an E-6 (A-B) Temperature Probe Failed Error Code

Kit number

Temperature Probe Kit 140989

Overview

The E-6 error code indicates an issue with the main temperature probe. The temperature probe monitors the oil temperature in the vat. When the E-6 error displays, cooking is no longer possible in the vat until the sensor is repaired.

This error typically points to a faulty temperature probe or connection issue between the probe and GMU board, but in rare cases, it may be caused by a faulty GMU board.

E-6 Errors:

  • E-6A: The temperature probe is open (disconnected or broken).

  • E-6B: The temperature probe is shorted (electrically shorted).

Call Avoidance

Perform these steps with the customers first over the phone as it may avoid an unnecessary service call.

  • Power Cycle the unit. If the error returns, service will be required.

Field Troubleshooting

  1. Perform all of the steps from the Call Avoidance section.

  2. On the touchscreen, tap the Settings Menu.

  3. Tap Service, and when prompted, enter code 1122.

  4. Tap the Heat System option from the Service menu.

The Main probe temperature should display. It will not display due if there is an error.

  5. Turn the power switch off.

  6. Remove the access panel under the touchscreen controls by opening the doors and removing the screws underneath with a cross-tipped screwdriver.

  7. Lay the access panel on the doors, front side facing down.

Note: The cover may get caught on the GMU board plates. If necessary, reach behind the cover and press the GMU plates near the top away from the cover.

  8. Unplug the probe from J29 of the GMU board.

  9. Check the ohm value using the RTD Resistance Chart.

Note: You will need the precision style test leads for your multimeter.

  10. If the temperature probe checks open or is out of calibration by more than 10° F or 6° C, the temperature probe should be replaced.

  11. If probe shows the correct ohm value, connect the probe to the next vat (if possible) to see if the error follows, if not, investigate the GMU board and replace.
