Troubleshooting the E-6 Main Temperature Probe Failed Error Code

Overview

The E-6 error code indicates an issue with the main temperature probe. The temperature monitors the oil temperature in the vat. When the E-6 error displays, cooking is no longer possible in the vat until the sensor is repaired.

This error typically points to a faulty temperature probe or connection issue between the probe and the board, but in rare cases, it may be caused by a control board issue.

E-6 Errors

  • E-6A: The temperature probe is open (disconnected or broken).

  • E-6B: The temperature probe is shorted (electrically shorted).

2 Level Probe
3 Bottom Probe

Auxiliary Probe

- Used for Testing Only

- Not found on all Fryers

Call Avoidance

There are no call avoidance steps for this error.

NOTE: When the E-6 error displays, cooking is no longer possible in the vat until the sensor is repaired.

Field Troubleshooting

Recommended Parts:

CFE 5XX Series

  • Temperature Probe

  • Control Board

Recommended Tools:

  • Basic hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, etc.)

  • Oil thermometer

  • Multimeter

  • Electrical contact cleaner

Troubleshooting Instructions

  1. Inspect the probe.

    • Make sure drain pan is in place and empty. Then, drain the oil from the vat.

    • Inspect the probe to make sure the guard and probe are not damaged or broken.

    • Replace probe if damaged, otherwise proceed to Step 2.

  2. Lower the control board.

    • At the rear of the control board, disconnect power by unplugging the connector at P2.

  3. Access probe connection.

    • Unplug the probe harness P3 from the control board.

  4. Measure probe resistance

    • Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (ohms) of the main temperature probe P3 pins 1 and 2.

  5. Measure oil temperature.

    • Use an oil thermometer to measure the oil temperature in the vat.

  6. Compare reading with Reference Chart.

Compare your resistance reading with the 1k-ohm chart based on the current oil temperature:

    • If the reading is open (infinite resistance) or if the reading is outside an expected oil temperature range of resistance or fluctuating greatly, replace the probe.

  7. Check probe connection.

If the probe reading is accurate, use a contact cleaner on the probe connections and ensure the probe is securely connected to the control board. If this does not correct the issue, proceed to the Step 8.

  8. Replace control board.

In the rare case the probe is good, and the connections are clean and secure, but the E-6A or E6B error persists:

    • Replace the control board.

Other Possibilities

  • In rare cases, the issue may be due to a damaged wire harness or intermittent connection. Inspect the wiring for visible damage or loose pins. The probe will need to be replaced if the wiring is damaged.
