Summary
Use these instructions to do the following:
-
Install a 2nd generation ZigBee radio onto a KFC SMS 20 control for PFE 500, 580, 590 - PFG 600, 690 - OFE 290 -OFG 390 model fryers.
-
Install a new SMS control on fryers built before May 2017 because the older control doesn’t have a GMP connector.
-
Install the required 3.00 or later software onto the control and if possible, test the connection to the restaurant’s network.
Verify Compatibility
2nd generation radios can be recognized by their large, external antennas. 1st generation radios are similar but have hidden, internal antennas. The 2nd generation radio connects to the SMS 20 control by a full-duplex RS-485 connection, which we refer to as the “GMP” port (General Multi-protocol Port).
Note: The GMP chip and connector were added to the SMS 20 control at the end of April 2017, so fryers manufactured before May 2017 may not have the GMP communication connector required for the 2nd generation radio.
IMPORTANT: The wiring harness must match the radio. A 2nd generation radio cannot be connected to a first generation 5-pin harness and plug it into the first generation Modbus connector. The radio will not work, and will not damage anything. but communication between the control and the radio will not work.
