Software Update

IMPORTANT: 2nd generation ZigBee radios require software version 3.00 or later. If your software is older than 3.00 you will need to reflash your control. Update the software to the most current version if necessary.

Verify the Software Version

To easily verify the correct software was installed, leave the control -OFF-, and then press and hold the number 12 product button, to view the software version: SW V3.00

Assessing Which Reflash Instructions to Use

Power the fryer on, with the control rocker switch in the -Off- position.

  • If a scrolling -FRYER POWER OFF- displays, use the reflash instructions for version 2.00 software and earlier.

  • If -OFF- displays, use the reflash instructions for version 3.00 software and later.

Reflash Instructions for 2.00 and Earlier (“Older” software)

  1. With the fryer powered on and the rocker switch off, press and hold Function until "REG PROGRM" displays.

  2. Press and release Function three times until "FAC PRESET" displays. Then "CODE" will display.

  3. Enter password 2, 9, 5, 7 using the number buttons. Factory preset mode will activate and "DEG MODE" will display.

  4. Press and release the Function button 15 times. "BOOTLOADER -FLASH" will display and scrolls. The number 8 LED will blink

  5. Press the number 8 product button to jump to the bootloader system. The display will go blank for a moment then "FLASH MENU" will display, and then the first bootloader menu option "FLASH" displays.

  6. Continue to Bootloader Reflash Steps.

Reflash Instructions for 3.00 and Later (“Newer” software)

  1. With the fryer powered on and the rocker switch off, press the number 18 and 19 product buttons simultaneously to activate USB / DATA mode. "USB / DATA" displays briefly, and then "1.PRINT REPORT TO USB" (or "1.REPORT -NO DRIVE-" if USB drive is not present) displays.

  2. Press and release the Function button 4 times. "5. FLASH SOFTWARE" will display and the number 10 LED is on.

  3. Press the number 10 product button to jump to the bootloader system. The display will go blank for a moment, and then "FLASH MENU" will display before the bootloader menu option "FLASH" displays.

  4. Continue to Booloader Reflash Steps.

Bootloader Reflash Steps (all software)

From the FLASH screen, the reflash steps are the same whether you have older or newer software.

  1. Remove the cap on the USB port, and then insert the USB drive. Small drives with few files work best.

  2. On the "FLASH" screen, press the number 9 button to proceed with flashing in new software from the USB driver.

  3. The control will display "SEARCHING" while it looks for the files on the USB driver, and then displays how many SMS 20 compatible files it found (e.g. 5 FILES). Only SMS 20 compatible files will be reported.

    • Note: Compatibility is determined by metadata stored inside the file – not by anything in the file name itself. The control will list all files compatible with an SMS 20 circuit board! You must be careful to choose the file that matches the actual type of fryer you have.

  4. Use the Function button to step through the list.

  5. If necessary, select "EXIT" to leave this operation or continue pressing the Function button to circle around to the start of the list again.

    • Be careful to locate the file that matches the type of fryer you have. The control lists all the files compatible with an SMS 20 circuit board, including files that are used on other types of fryers with SMS 20 controls.

  6. When the desired file is located, press number 9 to select it. The display will change to a confirmation prompt of "X CONFIRM" or "X 96820 K"

  7. Press the number 9 button to perform the reflash process. The following messages will display:

    • VALIDATING - Validating the selected file’s size and checksum.

    • SAVING - Saving a backup copy of the old software.

    • ERASING 1..7 - Erasing the old program memory

    • UPDATING - Flashing new software into the program memory

    • -OFF- Reflash complete. Ready to use.

  8. Once "-OFF-" displays, the flash operation is complete. Next time the control is turned on, an initialized or upgraded message will show if the new software adds additional settings to the control that didn't exist in the old software.

    • When done flashing the control, always use the "REMOVE USB" feature and wait for the OK prompt before removing the USB drive from the control.

Remove the USB Drive

Always use the official Remove USB process before pulling the USB drive out. This assures that all files on the drive are properly closed. Otherwise, the information on the drive may become corrupted.

  1. With the fryer powered on and the rocker switch off, press numbers 18 and 19 product buttons simultaneously. "USB / DATA" displays briefly, and then "1.PRINT REPORT TO USB" displays.

  2. Press the Function button 3 times. "4.REMOVE USB?" displays.

  3. Press the number 10 button to initiate the removal sequence. The control will display "WAIT..." and "OK--REMOVE".

  4. Once the "OK--REMOVE" displays, it is safe to remove the drive

If the drive is not been removed within 60 seconds of activating the sequence, the removal sequence is canceled, and the control may resume writing files to the drive again. If you still intend to remove the drive, you must re-activate the removal process.

Software Configuration

Use the following instructions to configure the KFC SMS 20 control for use with the 2nd generation Digi ZigBee radio. 2nd generation radios can be recognized by their large, external antennas while 1st generation radios are similar but have hidden, internal antennas

2nd generation ZigBee radios require SMS 20 software version 3.00 or later. If your software is older than 3.00 you will need to reflash your control.

Enabling ZigBee Operation

Communication between the ZigBee radio and the control is separate from communication between the ZigBee radio and the surrounding store’s mesh network. Both connections must be enabled for communication to occur.

Communication between the SMS 20 control and the ZigBee radio must be enabled in Factory Presets mode. Otherwise, if a radio is physically present but the control’s ZigBee software setting is not enabled, the control will make no attempt to communicate with the radio—even if the radio is autonomously communicating wirelessly with the store network and shows up in the store’s ZigBee radio list.

Do the following to enable ZigBee communications

  1. From normal operation with the control either off or on (but not cooking) press and hold the Function button until "REG PROGRM" displays.

  2. Release button

  3. Enter the code 2, 9, 5, 7 to activate Factory presets mode. DEG °F” (or °C) displays.

  4. Press and release the Function button 13 times to arrive at the ZigBee Enable step "ZIGBEE ENABLE OFF" will display.

  5. Press and release the number 8 product button under the word OFF to toggle it to on and "ZIGBEE ENABLE ON" will display.

  6. Press and hold the Function button to return to normal operation.
